Background

The main objective of the project was to enhance mental well-being among schoolgirls by promoting active participation in sports and recreational activities as a means of stress reduction, emotional expression, and social bonding.

The project applied a practical and participatory approach, combining awareness with physical engagement:

  • Conducted mental health awareness sessions focusing on stress management, emotional resilience, and self-confidence.
  • Organized structured sports activities including football, netball, and team-based games.
  • Facilitated inclusive recreational games designed to encourage participation from all students regardless of skill level.
  • Promoted peer interaction and teamwork to strengthen social support systems.
  • Provided guidance on how physical activity contributes to mental health improvement.

A total of 356 girls from Nyankumbu Girls Secondary School directly participated in the project. The intervention ensured inclusivity, allowing students from different backgrounds and abilities to engage actively.

The project generated measurable and observable impact:

  • Increased awareness and understanding of mental health among students.
  • Reduced stress levels and improved emotional well-being reported by participants.
  • Enhanced self-confidence and self-esteem among girls.
  • Strengthened peer relationships and teamwork skills.
  • Increased participation in physical activities as a regular coping mechanism.

The integration of sports and mental health education created a supportive and engaging environment where students felt safe to express themselves. The project demonstrated that low-cost, school-based interventions can significantly contribute to improving mental health among adolescent girls.

  • Limited sports equipment restricted the variety of activities.
  • Time constraints within the school schedule affected the duration of sessions.

Despite these challenges, the overall implementation remained effective.

  • Sports and games are highly effective entry points for mental health interventions in schools.
  • Creating safe and inclusive spaces encourages participation and openness.
  • Peer-based approaches enhance sustainability and long-term impact.
  • Scale up similar interventions to other schools in Mwanza and beyond.
  • Invest in sports equipment to diversify activities.
  • Integrate mental health programs into school extracurricular frameworks.
  • Train teachers to sustain activities and provide ongoing support.
  •
  • The project successfully demonstrated that sports and games can be powerful tools in addressing mental health challenges among adolescent girls. By reaching 356 students, FRECHO has contributed to building a healthier, more confident, and resilient generation.
